Interview with the Bride

I started looking for my wedding dress in the April, so about 7 months before the wedding day. My dress was totally different to what I went looking for!

It was covered in sequins and almost backless. It was so elegant though the sequins were white/clear so sparkled just enough and the detail was exquisite! I loved the train, it was long but not excessive and was just tulle (the sequins faded from the top to the bottom so there were some in the train but only very sparse). It also made my Mum, Sister, Cousin and Best Friend cry when I came out in it....and other girls in the shop were watching and wanted to try it on too.

At the ceremony my dad traditionally gave me away, but we changed the wording slightly so it wasn't too old-school. We also lit a candle in remembrance of our loved ones who could not be there (Jamie and I have both lost three grandparents and I have lost and Aunty and Uncle from both Mum and Dad's side).

The style of our wedding was modern and elegant. Our colours were navy blue with white, and the flowers were deep red. We had touches of bling in ways of mirrors and crystals. We had white seat covers and table cloths with navy blue bands on the back of the chairs & squares on the table. The bands on the chairs had a small diamonte buckle to hold them in place. The Bridal table was the same except instead of runners it had a navy blue and white draping along the front. We did not need a backdrop as we sat in front of the window looking out over the lake and waterfeature. The Bridal Table also had a "Mr & Mrs" sign in front of Jamie and I, with orchids that were the same as bouquet from one end to the other. There were small vases on the table as well, for the girls to put their bouquets into.

Sitdown – Canapés and drinks were served in the wine tasting room of the Duckstein (because it was raining!) while we were having our photos taken, then the canapés were placed on the tables for entrée. Then the main meal was served, followed by our cake as the dessert.

The decorations in the room were mainly all done by Wez Enterprises. We supplied our own mirrors/frames to display the favours, our own mirrored box Wishing Well and our own Polaroid Camera and guest book which was all put out by Duckstein staff. The guests tables had mirror squares in the middle and standing on top were tall martini glass shaped vases with red orchids and twisted willow. There were also small candles around the vase with small crystals in them.

Our cake table was decorated the same as the bridal table and was just to the side, this also had the orchids provided by our florist on it. The MC lectern was a wine barrel which had a vase and the throw away bouquet for the girls in a vase on it to dress it up.

The Maid of Honour (my sister), The Best Man (Jamie's best friend), my Dad and Jamie's Dad all gave speeches. They were all well written and just long enough. Every single speech had the room in laugher. My brother was the MC and did the best job! He introduced each person for their speech with a light hearted joke about who they were before he announced them, which also made the whole room laugh. My sister needed moral support for her speech as she was so nervous, so my cousin, a Bridesmaid, stood with her. The Best Man ended his speech with a message from a good friend of ours that was in London and could not make it for the day which brought a few tears to our eyes.

We had a Bridal Waltz, but we only danced together briefly then my Dad came and danced with me and Jamie's mum danced with him. Then My Mum and Jamie's Dad came up to dance and we swapped back to dance together with My Dad and Jamie's mum dancing together. Then our Bridal table joined in before the song finished. We were too nervous to be up there on our own by ourselves for too long!

We did the traditional bouquet toss for the girls, which my sister won. And played the game "Knights, Cavaliers & Horses" for the boys to win the garter, which was won by one of the groomsmen.

We had at least 18 months to plan the wedding, but was all done in about 10. with 115 guests it came to around $30,000, and we kind of came under. That was for everything except our outfits and makeup and hair styling and pre pamper day. So if we add in what I spent myself as well as being under budget with the money from our parents we probably went over by about $3,000 (my dress!).

My wedding planning advice for you:
Have fun, it all works out in the end and the day goes so quickly! But soak it all in. As far as planning goes do as much research as you can. Get a few ideas and few quotes, don't go with the first person you meet ... although I ended up doing that because the first person ended up being the best! Don't let anyone else tell you what to do! It is your day, it is ok to get advice but don't feel bad if it isn't your style and you want to go with your choice!

My veil blew off from the wind, and I forgot to put it back in when I got to the alter! I was so overwhelmed and excited it never crossed my mind. So in hindsight I would think more about those little things on the day. But then again I had too much fun to be thinking straight!
