Interview with the Bride

jarrod kellywedding 1We had just over a year to plan our wedding which was perfect, allowing for both hectic and relaxed times. We didn’t have a set budget but we were aiming for under $70,000 including 2 honeymoons where we met with 120 guests. We had two honeymoons – a “mini-moon” to Vietnam straight after the wedding and then trip throughout Europe in May/June.

The idea of a down south wedding came pretty early on as Jarrod was from the area. When trying to find the perfect location, we saw a beautiful photo by Blakeney Photography taken at the Margaret River's Secret Garden on a website and we both decided then we needed that place and that photographer.

We bought each of the bridesmaids a ring with yellow diamonds,  and each of the groomsmen engraved pocket watches. We also went and designed Thank You gifts for our parents and grandparents (as they were the flower girls) which incorporated the tree from our invites and a special personalized quotes hand painted onto a display plate.

I started looking for my dress about 8 months before the wedding, which ended up being much needed as custom-made takes a while. I only went to one store and when I met the ladies at Brides by Design I knew I wanted to design my own and with them. I went looking with ideas from 3 different dresses. I had no idea if these ideas would or could work together but . . . amazingly they did. So we designed my dress with a lot elegance and a touch of sexiness.

Our ceremony was at 4pm and ran for around 30minutes. It was perfect timing and afterwards we met everyone on the lawn area for some group photos and the cutting of the cake. Our wedding ceremony was designed to be short and sweet. We had a reading we chose read by one of our close friends and the Luckenbooth broach was incorporated to meet with the Scottish traditions from my side of the family.

We decided to provide our own canapés and serve the cake straight after the ceremony so everyone had the time to enjoy with a drink of champagne. While we had our photographs, our family and friends had wedding cake, drinks, homemade canapés and lawn games at the ceremony location. We then transported our guests to the reception location and met them there.

We are asked our family if they would like their children to attend, but most said they would prefer a night out without their children so we didn’t invite any children to our wedding.

We chose to create many of the projects ourselves – and chose suppliers who were able to let us have the DIY touch. We made lots of visits to salvage yards and farms for elements such as window frames, crates and pallets. We were fortunate enough to have amazing family who helped us wherever they could.

Our family was totally amazing. They helped create the flower boxes for the tables, the entrance sign, the stand for the book signing tables, the hanging old lights, the hearts around the area, the canapés - the list goes on forever.

I knew nothing about flowers until meeting Nardine from Scentiment Flowers. We met her at an expo and she was so personable we could have chatted for ages. The only thing I knew I wanted for my flowers were the colours, so Nardine connected with my Pinterest board and spent an amazing amount of time suggesting the best ones for season and style. This was the same for both our Mothers, as we asked them to design their own flowers for the day as well.

Coast to Country Wedding website was especially beneficial in the planning stages while we were trying to find suppliers and local knowledge. The Real Life Weddings section helped us to see what other couples had done in certain situations.

Jarrod was in charge of the lights, the area set-up ... and of course keeping me calm!

We wanted a sit-down reception, however we also wanted a beautiful setting outside in the trees . . . .  which led us to select Karriview Lodge as our reception venue. The Lodge outdoor space was a blank canvas so we were able to add our own touches with chiffon and lights throughout the trees and a beautiful dance floor. We went for an elegant rustic style, with pastels as the primary theme and then pops of strong orange and yellow throughout.

Our reception was full of toasts by our families, best man, maid of honour and plenty of dancing. We had an amazing band that kept the dance floor going all night and we received so many compliments about them. Their quality and style of music was brilliant.

My advice for brides is to think about your family and friends, but also yourselves. It is your day so don’t waste a second – have fun, smile, laugh and enjoy every moment.

It's also really important to have a backup plan in case of bad weather that you are happy with. The day before our wedding there was a day of torrential downpour – there was a very realistic chance that the outdoor reception wouldn’t have happened. Luckily the day turned out beyond perfect weather-wise but there was a scary moment.

Extra Special Tidbit

3 days before the wedding we found out we were expecting a little bub so the stress levels went up, but on the day of the wedding nothing mattered and it was great having our own little secret sharing the day with us.

P.S. She was born on the 4th of November 2015 – Alessandria Eve.
