Interview with the Bride
We gave ourselves 12 months to plan our wedding. We had 102 guests which included five children – our four nieces and our daughter. The very young girls left after the ceremony and the 3 oldest stayed at the reception for a short time. I had arranged a party bag for each of them with matching pyjamas for them to change into to be more comfortable, and lots of sticker/ activity books, glow in the dark jewellery, colouring-in books and puzzles.
I gave my bridesmaids the jewellery they wore on the day, and the groomsmen were gifted their ties and belts as their gift.
I started looking for my wedding dress, roughly 9 months before the wedding. I felt like a princess in it. My dress was light and so comfortable to wear. The groom wore a navy blue suit and baby blue shirt.
My bouquet was baby’s breath and silver dollar. I loved the baby’s breath because it was dreamy and went really well with the silver dollar which we loved. Silver dollar is a native, and we wanted everything to blend into the beautiful surroundings we were lucky enough to be married in. The flower girls wore gorgeous baby’s breath flower crowns made by Brendan's very talented Aunt.
My mother-in-law made a gorgeous carriage by converting Brendan's crib from when he was a baby. We had our youngest flower girl sit in the carriage whilst the older flower girls pulled her down the aisle. It was a complete surprise for Brendan.
On the front of the carriage was a sign saying "Uncle Bibi, here comes your girl" and on the back "Aunty La, he's ready" it was so precious. After the ceremony Brendan picked up our daughter and the three of us walked down the aisle together.
Because we were married outside we didn't have to do too much decorating to do. We had the use of magnificent pergola and stunning gardens at the Estate. We did have the silver dollar and baby’s breath on the aisle chairs and at the signing table at the ceremony, and continued that look throughout the reception. Aravina's function room is truly so beautiful that we didn't want to take away from the stunning chandeliers. We kept it simple with a few candles on each table and the native floral arrangements.
We kept the ceremony short and sweet. The ceremony took place in the late afternoon, the bridal party had about an hour of photos on the grounds at Aravina whilst the guests had canapés on the balcony and then progressed onto the reception. It flowed beautifully. We didn't want huge gaps between the ceremony and reception.
The fact that we had the police chaplain as our celebrant was so special. Also, Brendan's best friend said a poem and his sister read a bible verse.
For our overall theme, we went for a Hamptons Style wedding because it suited the venue and reflects our personal style. Navy and white was our colour theme. We chose Aravina because we fell in love with it when we went there for lunch. Brendan's parents live in Yallingup and we love to visit the Margaret River Region, so it was natural for us to get married there.
Brendan's brother-in-law and my brother did speeches, along with Brendan's dad. The highlight was Brendan’s speech, he had the most heartwarming words. There was not a dry eye in the house because he spoke beautifully. It was very emotional but very special.
Once the bridal party had been introduced, Brendan and I went straight into our first dance together. At the end of the dance we asked the DJ to ask everyone to please get on the dance floor. We had "Love Shack" playing and every single person was on the dance floor. It was electric and such a great way to start the night and get everyone in the mood for a fun evening.
Do you have any advice for other brides planning their wedding or anything different you would have done differently?
My advice would be, RELAX. Enjoy every moment because it's a whirlwind and it's over so quickly. At the reception sit down with your new husband and eat your dessert together and take it all in because you can get so caught up in mingling with the guests that you forget to spend special time together.
