Interview with the Bride

We gave ourselves about 8 months to plan our wedding. We got engaged in June 2015 and managed to be organized in time for a March 2016 wedding. We had 52 guests and no children. It was a lovely, intimate wedding.

My bridesmaid and my mum received a robe to get ready in from Posy Robes and the groomsmen and my dad received personalized tie clips and dress socks.

I started looking for my wedding dress a month after we got engaged, in July 2015. It was just me! I was a pretty non-traditional bride and didn’t even step foot into a bridal dress store. My dress was straight off the rack, I found it on the first shopping trip and it fit like a glove - I think it was just meant to be! It wasn’t full length so was really comfy and I could definitely wear it again. I just loved it!

Cameron wore a grey tailored suit, white shirt and black tie.

I had King Proteas and leucadendrons from local Yelverton Protea Farm along with roses, eucalyptus leaf, olive leaf, baby’s breath and some other filler flowers. I wanted to have a fairly rustic bouquet and arrangements to look like they were picked from the garden. I love native flowers, so king proteas were a must for my bouquets.

We chose Kneedeep, as we loved the big trees and the feeling that you were just amongst the vineyards.

We had a 4pm ceremony but encouraged guests to get there early as there was a 10 minute walk to the back of the vineyard. We set up drinks along the walk and tried to create an experience for guests. Following the ceremony we had beer and champagne before we went off for photos and the guests walked back to the restaurant.

We definitely wanted our ‘theme’ to be rustic, simple and pretty. I wanted fresh flowers, wine barrels and candles. The location amongst the vineyards was so beautiful that we didn’t want to take away from the natural setting.

There was a lot of DIY involved. I love a good crafternoon so had a lot of fun making most of the decorations and invites. We even dried our own rose petals for confetti. I recycled lots of jars to use as vases which we had fresh flowers in. I also made lots of candles and tealights in smaller jars which were throughout the reception. We handpainted wooden signs to direct people on a walk through the vineyards and down to our ceremony location. We used wine barrels for both the ceremony and reception.

For the ceremony, we wanted to involve both our Mums, so had them both do a short reading. Cam and I also incorporated a wine ceremony where we locked a bottle of Knee Deep wine, along with letters to each other, in a box to open on our Five Year wedding anniversary.

Our celebrant, Erin, made a real effort to get to know us before the day. We both had to complete a questionnaire about each other and this detail was included in the ceremony without us knowing what she was going to say. This was lovely. It was romantic and personal, but still relaxed.

After the ceremony formalities, and while we had formal photos, we had an acoustic duo that played live music along with drinks and canapes being served for our guests. We organized with the Knee Deep staff to take our guests through a group wine tasting. We also had a Polaroid camera for our Guest Book so guests took a photo of themselves and stick it in the book with a message. This was great and provided some fantastic memories of the night.

The reception location is why we initially considered Knee Deep, then we saw they also had the ceremony location. It was so great that our guests didn’t have to travel between venues. Cam and I are big foodies and love our wine, so Knee Deep had it all!

We wanted to create a big family dinner feel and not have anything too formal. Our main aims were for good food, good wine and a fun atmosphere. We had one big long table on the deck area of the restaurant that seated all our guests and our bridal party and meant we didn’t have a seating plan. We had a share style dinner and split up the courses with speeches in between. Following dessert, and Cam and my speeches, everyone was asked to get up and join the dance floor for our first dance. The acoustic duo then played all night keeping everyone on the dance floor, which was so much fun!

My main advice to other brides, would be to enjoy the process of organizing your wedding. You hear so many horror stories of how stressful it is, but if you focus on what you both want for the day you can make it happen and have fun through the process!

Where did you go on your honeymoon? Sri Lanka and the Maldives. It was amazing – the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation!

Did you use Coast to Country to help plan your day? Yes I did. As I wasn’t based in the South West it helped me find some local suppliers and ideas, which was great!
