Jonelle & Matt's Abbey Beach Resort Wedding
Interview with the Bride
We got engaged on 14/8/15 and planned our big day for 10/3/17 so we had about 18 months to plan. We didn't stick to a strict budget, we always knew our wedding would be large and we didn't want to scrimp on any details. We had a massive wedding with 200 guests. We had no children invited to our wedding. We decided that it is not a place for kids and with having such a large wedding, we felt that there was a lot else going on.
We both grew up holidaying in Busselton as young kids for many years. Matt and his family used to holiday at Mandalay Caravan Park and I used to holiday at Acacia Caravan Park with my family. We first met on the beach out the front of Acacia and we got engaged on the same stretch of beach so it is a very special place for us both with lots of beautiful memories.
Matt was in charge of the suits and men's gifts. He agreed with all my ideas when I ran them past him which made for smooth sailing.
For the groomsmen, we bought them a black dress watch which we imported from the United States. They wore these on the day and we also had them engraved as a keepsake memento. For the bridesmaids, I organised a gift box for each of the girls full of little goodies to show them how much I appreciated their help in the lead up to the day. This included a pink satin robe for each of them engraved with their initial.
I started looking for my dress about 10 months out from the big day which I was told from quite a few people was pushing it time wise. I tried on about 20 dresses in total and the dress I just fell in love with was the last dress I tried on. I instantly knew it was the one, its crazy to think that you do have 'that moment' when you just know. To have my mum and grandma crying feels pretty special too.
The romantic, princess, Cinderella feeling I had when my dress was on. I had tried all different styles as I had no preconceived idea of what I would get. It had flowers that were attached all over that gave it a 3D effect. It is a very traditional style of dress complete with a train.
We had our ceremony in the garden at 3pm. It seemed early but with the amount of people that wanted to congratulate us afterwards, time soon runs away. We had photos on the beach and our reception was at 7pm.
During our ceremony, we had my brother Jayce and Matt's sister Krysten do a reading so that we could involve them in a special part of our day.
I went with roses for the bridal flowers because they are just so elegant and classic. The bridesmaids had white rose bouquets and my bouquet was white roses with a few red roses incorporated into it to match my bridesmaids dresses.
In between the ceremony and reception, we organised pre-dinner drinks and food in the private bar area of Abbey Beach Resort. All of our guests were provided with unlimited alcohol and food until it was time for them to enter the ballroom and wait for us to return from our photos.
We went for an elegant white theme throughout the reception with just a touch of red to match in with my bridesmaids colour. We didn't have anything that was over the top, just went for a classic feel.
We pretty much went all white. I feel that weddings are traditionally white themed. We had masses of white fairy lights adorning the ballroom and white chair covers. It looked magical. A special touch was our cake topper. We ordered it online and had it made in our likeness. To make it personal for us, it had me holding my beloved chihuahua Lexie and Matt had his beloved football jersey of Collie Eagles on.
We hired Vicki from Wez Enterprises as our decorator and she did an amazing job. She is very professional and has so many things to choose from. We didn't do any DIY as we are not really talented in that field.
Not in particular. We were just very humbled by everyone taking the time to travel and stay and to also to take time off from work as it was a Friday wedding. The majority of our guests had travelled over an hour from our home town in Collie.
For as long as I can remember, I wanted a sit down three course meal for our reception. I personally don't think you can beat a traditional sit down meal. It is so much more formal and wedding like.
At our reception, one of the most special moments for me was my sister Chantelle's speech. She was my maid of honour and when she got up to do her speech, she actually sung us a song. It was a song that she changed the words to and made it so meaningful. She is by no means a singer but the courage she showed to perform in front of 200 people just touched me in a way that I cannot explain. Was a very special moment, and honestly not a dry eye was in the room.
Just to be very organised with keeping up with all of your suppliers. We had personal meetings with everyone. Sitting down and speaking face to face with them is the only way of getting your thoughts across properly. We met everyone a couple of times personally and then emailed back and forth as much as possible. You don't want any loose ends on the day. All your suppliers need to be knowing exactly what is needed/required so that it runs smoothly. The more time you put in, the more it runs like clockwork. We tried our best to have suppliers that were local to Busselton, so that it meant less people travelling and less chance of them being held up unnecessarily.
Looking back at our wedding day, there is honestly nothing I can say I would change at this moment in time. Everything ran exactly how I had planned it and we were extremely lucky that everything went how we envisioned. The weather was absolutely perfect and I highly recommend March as a wedding month.
We left for our honeymoon on the Wednesday after the wedding and we went to Switzerland to snowboard for 4 days and then we travelled our way through Italy for the remaining week and a half we were away.
Yes, as we were not from Busselton, we were unsure of suppliers etc. Looking at your website and reading other peoples reviews was an awesome tool for us.
