Lara & Jack's Laurance Winery Wedding
Date: 29th November 2014
Wedding Ceremony & Reception: Laurance Winery, Margaret River
We chose the venue in September 2013 and then really started planning in January 2014. We didn't really have a budget, I knew it was going to be expensive as I tend to have quite expensive taste. I thought we would come in at around $80,000 however it ended up being $110,000!
Jack works FIFO so it was really hard for him to be involved and I'm a control freak, however he had input in every decision. He helped choose the stationery, he was involved in choosing the menu, the drinks, the weddings cars – he pretty much had an opinion in everything.
My husband and I are very on-time people, so I had running sheets and time schedules for everyone – including our suppliers! Unfortunately things didn't go as planned on the day & the truck delivering our arbor had some mechanical issues so we had to detour our wedding cars and run 45 minutes behind for the ceremony.
I had an arrangement of white and pink peonies – no particular reason other than they are super pretty flowers! I wore my granny's ruby & diamond brooch on the stem of my bouquet for my something borrowed. The girls had bouquets of babys breath.
For my girls and flower girl I made them lovely gift boxes that were filled with a handwritten Thank You card, their jewellery for the day, a lipstick & lip-gloss, shoes, personalized robes, personalized top and matching shorts and personalized slippers. Pretty sure Jack just drank beers as a thank you to the boys!
Jack & I fell in love with Laurance Winery the moment we saw it. We did look at other venues, especially in Perth, however nothing compared to the beauty of Laurance and the warm welcoming from Sharon, Sami & all the staff.
I had always thought I knew what I wanted & had about 100 photos of potential dresses on my phone well before Jack proposed, however when I went to the bridal stores I tried on the biggest dress just for a laugh and fell in love with the princess style! I started looking as soon as we were engaged, so May 2013 & had my designer locked in to begin in November 2013. The uniqueness of the design – I loved how the skirt was so fluffy – its looks ridiculously uncomfortable but I didn't want to take it off! It's like sitting in a cloud.
I never really had a "theme" so to speak – I wanted our wedding to reflect our personal styles, which are quite classic (I'm a tad more extravagant than my husband ha-ha). I knew I wanted loads of beautiful flowers and candles. I went to Miriam from Chic Rustique with my vision, loads of photos and ideas and she helped me to make my vision become a reality. We had the free standing white arbor, decorated in sheer draping, flowers and a chandelier at the ceremony with 100 white tiffany chairs for everyone to be seated.
Jack & I had our mums say a reading that they chose, which was super special.
Only infants were at the wedding as they are easy to entertain and our niece and nephew were the flower girl and page boy. My mum made them gift bags filled with toys, coloring books, gadgets and fun stuff so they were entertained.
We also had a "love lock" ceremony where we had an infinity padlock engraved with our names & wedding date that we locked onto the gate at the lake of Laurance.
We celebrated with 100 guests. We had the traditional 3 course sit down menu with substantial canapes and drinks for the 2 hour waiting period for our guests whilst we were having our photos done. Entrée was a choice of either Caramelized onion tart, goats curd, roquet, asparagus and pine salad, truffle oil dressing or Porcini rubbed quail, braised green lentils, thyme & prosciutto, main was a choice of either; Rack of Aracady lamb with honey glazed heirloom carrots, pearl barley, green pea & brown ale broth or; Free range chicken breast, stuffed with brie and roquette & cashews, wrapped in prosciutto with sweet potato galette, buttered kale, romescu sauce and wedding cake for desert.
Our wedding had very much a modern rustic/vintage feel with deep golds, pinks, whites and loads of candles, flowers and candelabras.
I did DIY quite a few aspects of the wedding;
* our table settings were mirrors I painted antique gold
* spray painted wine and beer bottles to use as vases together with raw pillar candles
* large vases of flowers and candelabras that sat atop the mirrors on white linen table cloths.
There were a lot of personalized aspects of our decorating, such as our "we love Instagram" sign, the large easel that displayed "welcome to the wedding of lara & jack". With the help of the ladies at Laurance and Miriam and her amazing team at Chic Rustique, my vision for the styling of the ceremony and reception came together so easily. Chic Rustique went above and beyond, as did Sami at Laurance in setting everything up on the day.
Our bonbonnieries were personalised candles from Yallingyup Candle Co with wooden "mr & mrs miller" hearts attached to them with ribbon.
All of our bridal party gave magnificent speeches, along with both of our dads. They truly touched our hearts. Thankfully our parents spared us the embarrassing stories! My parents organized a special surprise for me. My dad didn't think he would be up to having a father/daughter dance so I said early on in the planning stages, don't worry its fine. Once Jack & I had had our first dance, Mandy our DJ and MC Mario announced the surprise which was a beautiful song "I loved her first" that my parents had chosen for dad to dance with me to. My gosh the tears were flowing! It was beautiful.
Advice for others: Try not to let the stress get to you! You wouldn't believe it, but even if you try to relax there are either some people or some situations that aren't ideal and there is nothing you can do about it. Sit back, relax and enjoy because it's not worth the tears on your day (unless they are tears of happiness of course!).
We put a few people on the spot a few days before the wedding as we realized we wanted a videographer but couldn't lock on in on time so we had two friends film on a friends borrowed camera and it was great! My close girlfriends and family came down south with me on numerous occasions; I was coming down every second weekend in the 6 months leading up to the wedding to drop things off! A huge thankyou to my friends & family who made the 5am trips with me!
