Natasha & David's Festival Style Margaret River Wedding
Interview with the Bride
When it came to my wedding dress, I knew exactly what I wanted so I went straight to the dressmakers to get it started about a year before the wedding.
We headed down to the venue the week before the wedding and stayed on site and had all our family/friends involved in making pom poms, planting cacti and the set up on the day. David was very involved in the wedding and was helping with a lot of the decorations as we made the majority of them together. He also made the tiki bar, steps for me to walk down to our ceremony as the ground was uneven and he was in charge of the alcohol.
We took 18 months to plan our wedding and had 110 guests. We wanted a festival style wedding where our guests could hang out with us for the weekend and we wanted somewhere that could accommodate everyone staying in the same place. We love camping and loved the feel of the venue. Our ceremony & reception were in the same location which made things easier. Ceremony started at 1.30pm then off to the barn for drinks and canapés. The whole thing just flowed from there, we didn't really want a structured day.
We had kids at our wedding so to entertain them we had a kids table with games, colouring books, lollies plus theres also a park at the venue which kept them entertained, a popcorn machine and fairy floss machine were hired as well.
We didn't have a florist so we stopped off at a local flower shop and bought a few bunches. We then combined them with the millions of pom poms that we had made and encorporated them into the bouquets we had created.
The Wedding Budget for a DIY Wedding: With our budget, I think we were a bit naive at first about how much everything was going to cost and because we were "do it yourself" everything we thought we would be saving money. We spent most of our initial budget on food and music because they are our two favourite things, we knew we didn’t want to scrimp on either of those thing's so the budget had to be increased from our original plan of $20,000 to double this. We also decided to hold the wedding over the whole weekend and provided food and entertainment for everybody for 2 days which pushed the budget up.
My shoes were by irregular choice and were the first thing I bought for the wedding, before I even had a dress! I saw them, knowing we were going to be having flamingos in the wedding somehow and had to have them. Everything was planned around those shoes! They are from Irregular Choice, a UK brand that specialise in fun crazy shoes!
We had Margaret River Burger Co serve our guests canapés after the ceremony then the burgers and chips were bought out later. Again we didn't want anything formal so people just sat/stood wherever they wanted to eat. We had a tiki bar serving fruity cocktails with lots of flamingos, leaves, cacti and so much colour.
As we didn't have a sit down meal we weren't planning on having speeches but the two best men got up on stage and said a few words. Our band had everyone up dancing all night, lots of photos in the photo booth and a lot of cake was eaten!
Advice for other's planning their wedding? Don't stress the small stuff. I honestly don't know if anything went wrong or was forgotten on the day because I was so wrapped up in it all. Take the time to spend even 10-15 minutes with your new husband away from everybody because you do not get a minute to yourself on the day, everybody wants a piece of you.
