Michelle and Andrew's Laid Back Dunsborough Wedding
Interview with the Bride
We both live in Bunbury. I'm originally from America and Andrew is from South Australia. We met on eharmony.com. We married in the Southwest because it's a beautiful low-key location. We didn't want our wedding to be fussed over and I didn't want it to feel or be too formal. It was exactly what we were looking for.
Who helped you to plan your wedding?
I did most of the planning to be honest. I had his sister come and help out deciding some specifics regarding the reception venue/catering. But I did most all of the planning.
What was the theme & colour scheme for your wedding?
We both wanted it to be laid back. I didn't want things to be too matchy, I didn't want people to spend hundreds of dollars on outfits. So we just went with a neutral themed wedding with a tinge of rustic country flair to it. I told my sister, who was my Maid of Honour, anything that was in the cream, pink, pale pink was good with me. I let her choose what she wanted to wear. For the Best man I just said 'swanky beach attire' in khaki coloured pants and a white beach style top.
What was the hardest part to plan for your wedding?
We were originally going to have a wedding in June 2014 in America, but I fell pregnant in September 2013. We had planned a very small and very simple ceremony, the one that we ended up having, in November of 2013. Thus, when we found out I were pregnant the very simple, small ceremony turned into the big deal in about 2 weeks. So lots of planning, inviting other people, organising my family to fly over. I think the hardest part of me, to be honest, was to relax during the day.
Tell us a bit about the format/timing of the day itself, how did you begin the day and how did you structure and time the ceremony & reception?
I really made an effort to keep it simple, but also thoughtful. The morning started out with my Mum and sister out for brekky. Andrew hung out with his side of the family. Then he and the boys went for a round of mini-golf and ice cream at Simmos (lucky!) We got ready in our accommodation and I prayed that there wasn't going to be any rain at all. They had forcasted rain the week before but it would change form 20-80% and I thought 'nah it wont rain'. I called around to local shire buildings, but couldn't find anything in such short notice. We had the ceremony planned at 4:30pm, let guests head straight back to Clancy's Fishpub for canapes whilst we took photos. We chose not to have a first look. Our goal was to be at Clancy's by 7pm for speeches and cake cutting. We didn't hire a DJ and there are not a formal dinner setting. Andrew's step-father was the MC and his sister sorted music. It was laid back, that's how we wanted it.
Tell us some details about your ceremony....
Well in my wildest dreams it would have been a lovely sun-filled day on the beach with a slight breeze.
That's what dreams are made for..dreams! It ended up sprinkling then raining right as we were about to leave and head to the beach. we had NO back-up plan. We called the boys at the beach and they said it wasn't raining. I then made a crazy last-ditched trip to Coles for the boys to get me umbrellas (of which we never used) and then we got lost on the way there. We were 15 minutes late. Andrew, my husband, as waiting. We walked down and then the dark clouds started rolling in. To be honest, I wish I would have relaxed more because the ceremony is a bit of blur to me. We had a friend do a reading from The Alchemist and then we had a pray from our friend. We read our own personalised vows to each other. RIGHT as we started reading our vows it just
POURED rain. I mean, poured! Luckily our friends had the most beautiful huge beach umbrella and we exchanged vows under it. Our guests got poured on. It made it memorable. It stopped at the end of the ceremony and we were blessed with a beautiful rainbow and sun!
Did you say traditional vows to one another or write your own?
We got a huge list of options form our celebrant and we both tweeked them a little bit. We had different vows for each other.
Best moment of your wedding day?
Seeing Andrew when I was walking down the aisle.
What happened at your reception?
We had ordered canapés for the guests while we were taking photos, instead of having a formal dinner service. Everyone was stuffed, or so they say.
We had our traditional speech line-ups. I made Andrew do the cake cutting and we just relaxed into the night. We didn't party hard, we just enjoyed
the night with our guests. We left about 10pm, because I really wanted to crash at our honeymoon accommodation.
