Sarah and Ryan's Modern Rustic Wedding
Interview with the Bride
How much time did you give yourself to plan your wedding day?
We had been engaged 3 years prior to our wedding day so I had a lot of time to decided on what I wanted but I probably spent the last year doing all the booking and arranging.
Why did you choose your particular ceremony/reception locations?
We chose St Joseph's Church because we loved the look of it and because I'm Catholic and we chose Wise Winery because my husband, Ryan, loves the ocean so we wanted a reception location where we could see the ocean. Wise was perfect. We had been to Wise a few times before and we had always loved the food, location and feel of the place.
What was your budget, and did you stick to it? Any blow-out items or any that came in well under budget?
We didn't really start out with a budget I just had an idea of how much I wanted to spent on the dress, reception, decorations, etc. I made all the vases for the tables from old coffee jars and twine and did the invitations, menus etc myself so what I saved on these I used to lash out and get the Tiffany chairs.
How many guests did you have at your wedding?
When did you start looking for your wedding dress?
I started looking in Jan/Feb and ordered it in March. It was the first dress I tried on. I went to several other shops but ended up going back to Zoo Bridal
What was it about your wedding dress you liked the most?
I loved the lace and the fishtail shape.
What were the flowers in your bouquet and why did you choose those ones?
The bridesmaids bouquets were all baby's breath and tied with twine and my bridal bouquet was mini white roses, white ranuculas and baby's breath. I just wanted something simple and classic.
Were children invited to your wedding and if so how did you keep them entertained?
Yes, one was my cousin Ruby who is 6 and she was the flower girl so she enjoyed hanging out with the bridal party.
What special details did you incorporate into your wedding ceremony?
The priest, Fr. Leon, was the same priest that married my parents. We both love Jack Johnson so every song played through out the ceremony was one of his.
What was your wedding day style/theme/look/colour?
Rustic, Country, Vintage.
How did you decorate your ceremony to suit your theme?
We had hessian cones filled with baby's breath to hang on the church pews along with white ribbon in bows and that was all really. We had some lilies in vases up near the alter, we just kept the decorations in the church simple.
What did your guests do after your ceremony while you and your wedding party went for wedding photos? Or did you have pre-ceremony photos?
We had the buses picking up guest from where they were staying so by the time guests went back to the accommodation after the ceremony it was pretty much time to be picked up by the buses to be taken down to Eagle Bay.
What did the groom organise?
Ryan organised the cars.
What gifts did you get for your bridesmaids & groomsmen?
We gave the bridesmaids a silk dressing gown and some earrings to wear on the day and for the groomsmen we got the flasks engraved with their initials and spirits to fill them.
How did you organize the decorations, did you DIY any aspects or did you involve friends/family or did you hire a professional?
DIY with help from my family - for the reception the table decorations were simple and had the coffee jar vases I had made along with the lids of the jars which I had turned into candle holders which were filled with barley. We also had the typewriter as the guest book and an old suitcase for our wishing well.
Were there any other ways in which family & friends contributed to the day?
My aunty made the button holes for the groom, groomsmen, and family (mums, dads, grandparents).
What was the structure & timing of the day like for the ceremony and reception?
The ceremony started at 2pm and then the reception started at 6pm. The bridal party arrived closer to 6:30-7pm but the guest were entertained with music, canapés and drinks from 6pm.
Did you have a traditional sit-down reception or did you do something different, if so, what was it like?
We had traditional sit-down reception.
What happened at your reception? Toasts? Dancing? Any funny or meaningful stories you'd like to share?
We had speeches from the best man, my sister/maid of honour also did a speech as well as my dad and Ryan's mum. The best man, Steve, did a great speech it was very humorous. Ryan and I also did our first dance. We didn't have a routine at all we just made it up. Then our bridal party joined us and then Ryan had a dance with his mum and I had a dance with my dad.
Do you have any advice for other brides planning their wedding?
Shop around for prices on everything and doing some DIY does help to save on costs but you do have to be prepared to put in a lot of time.
Is there anything you would do differently if you could have your wedding again?
No! Everything was just the way I had imagined it.
Where did you go on your honeymoon?
Sydney for a week then to Raratonga, Cook Island for a week.
