Ashleigh & Shaun's Boho Bunkers Bay Beach Wedding
Interview with the Bride
Our wedding day took 6 months to plan and cost around $27,000 with 70+ guests. I will say that my dress and head piece were the blow out items but my mum paid for them.
We chose our location because it was a mixture of nature and coast which reflects us as a couple. We spend a lot of time Downsouth and Bunker Bay is so breath taking, it’s hard to beat. The calm bay and the trees.. its divine.
We received some beautiful gifts from our family and friends on our wedding day. I was lucky to have my bridesmaid make a decorated wooden book that all my bridal party, immediate family and Shaun placed little letters inside with photos, memories and well wishes, I cried when I received it.
On the morning of our wedding I read the letter from Shaun it was so beautiful it made me ever so look forward to walking down the aisle even more. Also I received a knicker bouquet, a set of hand painted glasses for each of us on the day and my sister brought me 4 silver pendants (that I now wear on a necklace) a sea shell for me, a feather for Shaun, a beautiful love quote and a blue crystal to attached to my bouquet, it was gorgeous.
My brothers (who was in my bridal party) girlfriend organized a beautiful basket for Shaun and I after the ceremony with champagne, beers and nibbles, she had labelled a glass for each of us and put so many sweet thoughtful things in there.
Our ceremony was at 4.00pm. Shaun is a bit of a surfy hippie from Byron bay and I am in love with all things whimsical and adore the sound of bells. I guess our style was boho mixed with quirky nature. Our dream catcher that hung behind us at the ceremony was personally made by a friend/artist which contained crystals for love, strength and patience, a little glass bottle with a blessing along with a lot of feathers and bells.
We had personalized vows at our ceremony with a ring blessing and Shauns vows were like a poem (apparently there wasn’t a dry eye in the house) we also had the offensive paragraph about marriage in Australia only being between a man & a women removed. Then while we were signing the marriage certificate we had dolphins jumping in the background.
My family and bridal party all decorated the reception area. We made all the decorations other than the fairy lights. Shaun loves birds so birds and feathers were incorporated with swan place cards and little birds on the cake, a bird name for each table. The boys had feather pin holes and Shaun had rare tropical bird feathers attached to his head band. I made coconut and lime scented candles and decorated them with lace & twine for the tables so when everyone walked in it smelt like the beach & summer. My bridesmaid had an anklet loaded with bells and lots of jingly bangles.
Our friends and family helped on our wedding day. My cousin played a beautiful song for me to walk down the aisle to, my close friend was our MUA , hairstylist and MC, my Nan made the cake, my mum helped make the candles and decorate the cards chest and wrote the place cards. Shaun painted the guest names for the seating sign, coordinated all the music and everything else we did together.
We did have a sit down reception, but nothing about our wedding was traditional. The top of our seating plan said “We have saved you a seat, but feel free to swap” and everyone did.
When we arrived at our reception we went straight into our first dance "Do you Love Me" By the Contours- it started with a bang and the party didn’t stop until the bus took everyone back to their accommodation at the end of the evening. The staff at Bunkers said they were all lined up outside peeking through the windows watching our family and friends dancing immediately after our arrival, they had never seen so many people in the room mingling and having an amazing time as soon as the music started which meant the world to us.
My brother and Shaun's brother made a speech on behalf of our family’s and my sister and Shaun's Best friend made a speech that meant a lot! As you will hear in the video the night I met Shaun I had just arrived at a running group raising money for a friend with cancer, he was a hippie that had just arrived back in Australia from travelling and was wearing jeans, a light snow jacket and a multi coloured beanie... I knew he was different from all the other boys I had met. We also had one friend swimming naked in the pond in the entry way to Bunkers pretending to be a statue squirting water out of his mouth later in the evening it was hilarious.
I enjoyed every single moment of our wedding from the night before with the girls all the way through to the next night where everyone met up at Clancy’s for a catch up dinner & drinks. It was an incredible week.
My best advice to you never let anyone or tradition dictate how your wedding should be done, it is a reflection of you and your partner – unique.
