Interview with the Bride

We started planning about 7 months before our wedding, using most of our weekends to plan all of the details. We had 75 guests.

Laura is from the country and this venue gave us a taste of the country, while not being too far from Perth for guests to travel to. The rustic barn feel and beautiful gardens reflected both of our love for anything rustic and the country, intimate and relaxed vibe we wanted for our wedding.

I started looking for my wedding gown probably about 5 or 6 months before the wedding. I managed to find my dress in the first shop I went to, so we didn’t go to too many stores after that! My favourite element of my dress was the lace. My dress had the most gorgeous lace, which made me feel beautiful and like a bride (both important things for your wedding day!) The dress was designed strapless, but I added some lace straps, which I was unsure about, but looking back I think actually made the dress! It also had a beautiful soft pink sash around the waist, which I loved too!

In the planning stages, the Coast To Country Wedding website was very helpful and often connected us with companies that we had not found in our google searches. As we did not live locally, it really helped us to know what companies were available in the area.

Jordan was very involved and we tried to share things pretty evenly, but as with most women Laura managed to carry everything in her head at once! She also led on the stylistic elements while one of Jordan’s main jobs was making signs, table centres etc from timber and organising some of the practical things at the reception such as power, lighting and layout.

Laura has some young siblings as well as some nieces and nephews so children were always a non-negotiable! There was quite a few of them and plenty of space to run and play games, as well as some animals, so for the most part they kept themselves entertained! We also had the lawn games (ring toss and giant jenga) which kept them amused and a parasol that Laura had used in the wedding which was hijacked by the kiddies!

One of the most important aspects of our wedding ceremony for us was the people involved. The bridal party were our nearest friends and family, two of Laura’s other very close friends did readings, Jordan’s Dad prayed a blessing over us and we had two of our pastors conduct the ceremony itself. We wanted everyone to feel really special and important at our wedding.laura jordanwedding 3

laura jordanwedding 4We wanted a rustic, casual feel. We focused around the colours navy blue, soft pink and ivory. We added little touches of ‘rustic’ here and there to add to the theme we were going for, but for the most part the venue was already so beautiful and rustic that we didn’t have to add much to make it beautiful, as we are quite simple people and didn’t want to overdo it with the decorations and end up taking away from the beauty of the venue!

Ceremony - we just had rustic chairs, with jars of flowers hanging from the aisle chairs, a vintage table as the registry table, and a J & L with some flowers at the front of the aisle on the hay cart.

Reception – festoon lighting at the front of the barn, fairy lights hanging inside the barn, additional rustic style tablecloths on top of the white table cloths, wood ‘rings’ with jars of flowers on top as the centrepieces, blanket basket to keep guests warm, lawn games for both the ceremony and reception.

Our ceremony started at 1pm and was followed by afternoon tea. The guests were then asked to leave the grounds while photos were being taken, then return at 5:30pm for pre-dinner drinks and appetisers, which led into the reception. This was the perfect timing in the end as it gave us enough time between the ceremony and reception to feel relaxed while getting photos taken on the Alverstoke grounds, but not so long that we were bored or tired!

Immediate family helped set up the last few things for the reception and clean up from the ceremony. Other guests went off for coffee etc (we provided a list of things to do locally along with our invitation).

We had a sit-down reception, though it was fairly casual. It was a bit of a squeeze with that many people in the barn for a sit-down reception, but we made it work!

laura jordanwedding 6I was fairly hands off with choosing the types of flowers in my bouquet. Jenny at Florist Gump is absolutely sensational! I love peonies, so I really wanted some of them in my bouquet and she even managed to do that when they were out of season! I described the feel we were going for, the colour themes, the style of bouquet (a bit structured and a bit relaxed, and a bit wild-flowery!) and she managed to pull it all together into the perfect bouquet!laura jordanwedding 7

At the reception, everyone received a ‘Guest Menu’ (we borrowed this idea from a close friend’s wedding). The guest menu had a brief description of each of the guests, how they were connected with the bride or groom, and a little anecdote of a time they shared together. We had speeches from the Maid of Honour, Best Man, Father of the Groom, Father of the Bride and Mother of the Bride.

We made a speech and we shared our story of how we got together, which most people hadn’t heard before. This was very spontaneous and provided many laughs, and was probably a highlight of the reception! We had our first dance and encouraged others to join in, but most people preferred to chat rather than dance!

For our honeymoon, we stayed our first night in Busselton, then drove to Denmark the day after the wedding for 3 nights, then flew to Bali for 6 nights after that.

My advice to other brides is to "Enjoy it!"
Enjoy the planning process and the lead up to your wedding – you’ll only get to do it once! And enjoy the day. Take time to stop throughout your wedding day to just enjoy it. Some of the ways we did this was to go out to dinner a few days before the wedding, and took time before the reception just to talk together and enjoy the fact that we were now married and that this was our day!

In hindsight, the only real change I would make to the organisation and planning of our wedding, is that maybe we could have delegated out some of the jobs a bit more to lighten our planning load. But that's all.

Our photographer, Sarah, was amazing! She is very professional and captured the day much better than we could have expected. Sarah has a very unique way of capturing everything within the ceremony, without even being noticed! She gives excellent directions when it comes to posing for photos and everyone knows exactly where to be and when. She balances this well with being relaxed and capturing the intimate little moments between the bride and groom and with family and friends.
