Interview with the Bride
We took 2 years to plan our wedding. CTCW was a BIG help especially in the beginning when I really had no idea where to start. I was able to read stories and look at so many different suppliers which really helped narrow down what kind of a wedding we wanted. Planning a wedding can be a bit daunting but CTCW was the best place to start.
Although we set a budget it did blow out in a few areas, however we were able to make up for it by doing some things DIY. We ended up with 117 guests, but that included the Bridal party. We gifted our attendants engraved wine and beer glasses to thank them for being part of our Bridal Party.
I arranged and booked almost everything myself, as anyone who knows Nathan knows that organising and decision making are not his strong points. So although he didn’t organise much, he was and is my biggest support. He helped make the invitations and just when I wanted to run away and elope, he always made me feel like my efforts were worth it. It was a team effort, in our own kind of way.
When it came to selecting my gown, I was at a Bridal Fair in Perth and Tuscany Bridal had a stall where you were able to try on dresses.
I thought I knew what sort of dress I wanted so I picked a few out to try on. This was 18 months before our wedding date. After trying them on I didn’t like any of them, and as we women do, I get a bit emotional and decided that I really didn’t want to put another dress on ever! The lady that was helping me, I think was her name Lucy, told me to hang on for just five minutes. She went out and came back with a plain strapless off-white dress and told me that I should try it on. I really didn’t want to, but she told me she had been doing this a long time and I should just trust her.
You know how brides always say that when you put on ‘your’ dress you just know that it’s 'The One'? Well, after trying on so many dresses that didn't suit me I really didn’t believe them. But I resigned myself to try on this plain, boring looking dress that Lucy was offering me . . . . and it made me feel like the most beautiful person in the room. It no longer looked plain and boring, it fit like a glove and my Mum cried.
So I took a wedding dress home that day.
I loved my dress as it made me look and feel amazing and it fit me so well. And as a bonus - it had pockets!
For my bouquet and flowers, I wanted Peonies and David Austin Roses. What is amazing is that I didn’t realise that November is one of the few months that they are in bloom and therefore easily available. They were the perfect choice.
Nathan and I both wrote our own vows, which for us was the most special and unique part of our day. It was our very own commitment to each other forever. Nathan's cousin and her fiance (an acoustic duo known as Feather and Down) sung at our ceremony and recorded an acoustic version of Beyonce's 'XO' for our first dance. We now have our very own one of a kind first dance song that we can listen to for ever!
When it came time to decide on a location to hold our wedding, my Mum and I decided to take a trip Downsouth one day. It was a sunny Spring morning and the roses were out in full bloom, the gardens were absolutely perfect and as soon as we saw the famous big tree we knew this was the place I had to get married.
We wanted our guests to be able to have a few drinks and let their hair down at the reception so we wanted a location where our guests didn’t have to drive to and from their accommodation. Nathan and I went looking at a few locations but nothing really caught our eye. We were shown around Abbey Beach and within 5 minutes Nathan said to me, "Yep, this is the place we are having it". I am so glad we did - it was perfect!
Sarah Henderson was our photographer and her photos of our day are beyond perfect. From our first consult to when we received our album, Henderson Photographics went above and beyond to capture our day and all its elements. Sarah even scaled herself over a fence, through the snake grass and through a spider infested forest to get a shot, which turned out to be our favourite photo!
Being able to take a photo at a wedding is one thing but to capture a wedding in such a way that all the emotions of the day come flooding back is something truly special and Sarah has the ability to do all of that in a single image. We can’t thank her enough! Our ceremony began at 3:30pm, with pre-dinner drinks for our guests beginning at Abbey Beach at 5:30pm. We had Abbey Beach supply pre-dinner drinks and canapes at the resort in a separate bar, so everyone had a chance to mingle and relax before formally sitting down at the reception.
We arrived at 7:00pm, after having all our formal photos taken. We decided to go traditional and have a sit down three course meal (and the food was amazing!).
We didn’t really have a theme as such, we decided to have clean, crisp neutral colours that sort of gave a simple, timeless feeling. Our ceremony didn’t need a lot of decorating, as we didn’t want to detract from the lovely gardens. We chose white chairs for the ceremony with flower-filled jars hanging from them to create the isle. Nardine from Scentiment flowers also decorated the tree canopy with lace lanterns, milk bottles and glass jars with beautiful white flowers. I remember looking up at the tree and thinking WOW! It looked exactly as I had imagined.
Our reception was white, white and more white. We had tall clear vases with pink and white peony flower balls for centerpieces sitting on a round mirror base with tea light candles, it was just enough to keep it simple without looking too plain. Viki from Wez Enterprises did such an amazing job, making our vision a reality.
Our family and friends made the whole day possible, especially our family. We couldn’t have done it without them. It was such a fun night full of delicious food, heartfelt toasts and outrageous dancing. We had the best night. I really can’t think of anything I would do differently. It was the best day and we both had the time of our lives!
One piece of advice that I took from other brides’ experiences was to remember to take a step back, take a big breath and really soak up the day. I was lucky enough to remember to do that and I am so glad I did because the day goes so so fast.
For our honeymoon we decided to spend 5 nights in Singapore enjoying the city life and being big kids at Universal studios, and then we spent 5 nights in the Gili Islands lazing by the pool. We finished off our honeymoon with a few nights in Bali where we caught up with some special friends. It was just what we needed after our big day!
