Interview with the Bride
We allowed 6 months to plan our wedding as we wanted to have the wedding during the Christmas school holidays, after we became engaged. This gave our guests time to plan and book their holidays in advance. We budgeted about $25 000 and were approximately at this cost.
We had 75 guests attend, there were only one of two children in attendance as we encouraged babysitters. Many of our guests used a babysitting service.
I loved my wedding dress because it was handmade by my sister Katie, who is a designer. About 5 months before the wedding, I tried on a few dresses as I initially thought I would buy a dress but this gave us some ideas for her to design one instead. She made the pattern and created it from our discussions and the one fitting I had. During the process, she organised numerous fittings so it fit like a glove, was very comfortable and the material felt lush and beautiful. The silk and French lace were purchased from Fabulous Fabrics, which had an immense range of high quality fabrics and exquisite laces.
For the bridesmaids I bought them handmade earrings from Cirkus Charm in Perth as I wanted a local artist. Matty bought the boys all suspenders for their outfits and some jetty timber from a Busselton artist.
Matty wore a blue suit jacket, white shirt, floral tie, sand trousers and tan leather shoes.
My mother and sister-in-law helped me choose the flowers. We ordered gypsophila because it is light and pretty, I also chose a range of champagne and apricot roses, purple limonium, hydrangeas and white chrysanthemums. We also used a lot of greenery from my mother’s garden. They made neat and pretty bouquets for the bridesmaids and myself, a few large arrangements for the reception room, and also smaller ones to sit on each table.
We wanted out reception to feel summery, floral, relaxed, country and rustic! We used burlap around the vases that Matty had cut green glass candle-stick holders and he made colour-coded table number picture frames with the seating chart at the front of the room. We also used white chair covers to continue with the white theme as the venue already has some large striking paintings hanging in the room, so this added to the overall drama of the room.
We chose Caves House as we live close by, and wanted to have somewhere where we could have the ceremony followed by the reception straight away. It has been one of our favourite places to visit since we moved to Busselton and it’s near the ocean, which we love. Also a lot of our guests had travelled from the East Coast as we grew up in Tasmania, so didn’t want to go off site for photos or have a big break before the reception.
Our ceremony began at 4:30pm followed by drinks and canapés on the terrace, with the reception from 6-11pm.
My brother and sister sang a song on ukulele after the formalities, we wrote our own vowels, and our celebrant, a friend from Broome, included some beautiful words from some special indigenous ladies from the Aboriginal community, Yakanarra, where we met.
My brother was the MC which was great as he knew almost everyone. We had speeches by the Best Man, both Fathers, one of my Bridesmaids and Matty. We followed the general structure of a traditional wedding but it was a more relaxed atmosphere, we wanted the dancing to start as soon as possible, as we knew everyone would get up and enjoy themselves once the formalities were over.
My advice to couples would be to make sure to go on a honeymoon as the down-time is much needed after such a busy time organising and greeting family etc. We honeymooned at Langkawi Island, Malaysia, which was beautiful, quiet, relaxing and warm.
We used Coast To Country Weddings, initially for styling ideas, and also for venue possibilities.
