How long have you been styling for Miriam?
Chic Rustique has been operating since 2010 but I have a long history in party decorating and wedding styling before I made it a profession. I styled charity balls, corporate dinners for local events and even my own wedding over 10 years ago. I have a strong background in art along with practical skills in viticulture and horticulture.
How has the business changed over the years and what are you doing now compared to a couple of years ago?
Chic Rustique started as a hire business. Whilst on maternity leave from my job as a wedding and events manager at one of the big wineries in Margaret River, I decided to buy a few candle holders and lanterns to hire out to brides that didn't want to spend the money on items that they would never use again. Working in the industry at the time I could see this problem happening over and over again so I saw an opening for a small business. I thought it would be perfect as a part time small business for me while I had a small child. The concept was so popular that I booked a dozen weddings in my first month and brides kept on asking me for more decorations to hire. I swore I would never get chair covers or bigger decorative items but the demand was increasing and I couldn't help myself. I got a loan from the bank, told my employer at the winery that I was taking the plunge with my own business and resigned, and I jumped right in. Now we have over 500 tiffany chairs, chair covers, ceremony furniture, reception decorations and I sent myself off to Flowers Design School to learn floristry so that Chic Rustique could offer brides the full styling package. We went from doing 20 weddings in the first year to averaging 80 per year in the last 2 years. I started with having a few items displayed on my dining room table in my house to now leasing a 400 square meter shed to house all our products! Brides love being able to get all their styling requirements and flowers from one supplier and we love it too. It's a very satisfying job to do.

Styling ideas that you love?
I love anything to do with nature. Many of our products are hand made to include sticks, bark, wood and natural products. I love being able to blend elegance with nature and I draw my inspiration from my natural surroundings. My husband has a farm which provides no limits to materials that can be turned into something beautiful for a wedding. I'm totally in love with flowers and how they add such romance to any event. We love creating unique and different designs. I'm also totally in love with hanging floral designs and floral walls at the moment.
When it comes to styling a wedding what is your tips to the bride and groom?
Try and choose a theme or style that compliments the venue as well as your personal style. Be realistic about your budget and what you can achieve with it. Expect to pay labor charges for the setup and dismantle of your wedding.

Planning your wedding don't... try and micromanage on the big day. Just leave it up to the professionals to do their jobs well. It's hard but if you can let go and just enjoy the day you will be so much more relaxed than worrying about whether the bonbonierres get put out. Trust the professionals as we do multiple weddings per year and we know what we are doing.
Regional events that you have styled:
Gourmet Escape Collaborative dinners at Vasse Felix, Aravina, Xanadu, and McHenry Honen plus other gourmet escape events at Voyager Estate, and Fraser Gallop. The MRWIA association annual wine dinner.
