Everyone's opinion on having a wedding
When I see a new bride announce she is getting married you can see family members and friends eyes sparkle and the conversation starts to get excited with what they think, what they have seen at other weddings and what they would do. I have also seen the bride pull a face like "But it's my wedding and I want what I want". That's cool you can have that.
I think that it is really special to hear everyone making suggestions about having a wedding. Planning a wedding is not like planning any other event. It's not like once the event is over you could say "Bugger I wish I had done that, oh well my birthday is next year and we will do that differently."
Planning a wedding is a one-off event.
To avoid the overwhelming feeling of "This is my wedding and not yours" be straight and honest about what you want from the start. You are always going to get that one person who isn't going to agree, tell you how it didn't work for their friend or they wouldn't do that. Take the comments with a pinch of salt and when you have a moment to yourself and time to think you will either see value in the advice or continue on your own path.
